From Your Mushy CEO

For most of my life, I thought I had anxiety.
Debilitating anxiety.
The kind that lived in my stomach.
Tightened my chest.
Kept me scanning every room, every conversation, every possible thing that could go wrong.
It made it hard to rest.
Hard to feel safe.
Hard to simply exist in my body.
That anxiety was one of the biggest reasons I became an addict at fifteen. I didn’t know how to calm what was happening inside me. I didn’t know how to feel safe in my own skin. I just knew I needed relief.
For a long time, I believed something was wrong with me.
What I understand now and what changed everything is this:
My body wasn’t broken.
My nervous system was loyal.
It was doing exactly what it learned to do to keep me safe.
Anxiety Isn’t a Flaw — It’s Memory
That racing heart.
The tight chest.
The constant scanning for what might go wrong.
That isn’t weakness.
It’s protection.
Your nervous system responding based on what it’s lived through.
It remembers the tension before arguments.
It remembers the sound of a phone buzzing before bad news.
It remembers when control once meant survival.
And here’s something most people aren’t taught:
Your nervous system doesn’t automatically update itself.
Years later, it can still be running the same internal software — even when your life looks completely different on the outside.
To the body, a missed email can feel like a real emergency.
Not because it is one but because your system learned long ago that sudden signals meant danger.
Your nervous system doesn’t live in logic.
It lives in pattern.
And it will keep responding the same way… until it’s shown something different.
Why You Can’t Think Your Way Out of Anxiety
We’ve been conditioned to treat our bodies like they’re doing something wrong.
Like they need to be corrected.
Managed.
Silenced.
We tell ourselves things like:
- “Just get it together.”
- “You’re fine, this isn’t serious.”
- “Push through it.”
But you can’t talk your way out of a survival response.
Your conscious mind processes a tiny amount of information each second.
Your subconscious processes millions.
By the time you decide how to feel, your nervous system has already responded.
That’s why affirmations sometimes bounce off.
Why logic doesn’t always land.
You’re trying to reason with an ancient alarm system, one that doesn’t understand language.
It understands sensation.
Safety Isn’t a Thought — It’s a Felt Experience
You don’t earn your nervous system’s trust by proving how strong you are.
You earn it by giving your body evidence of safety.
Safety isn’t an idea.
It’s an experience.
It’s the exhale you didn’t realize you were holding.
It’s unclenching your jaw before your mind finds a reason.
It’s hearing your own footsteps and realizing no one is chasing you anymore.
When I stopped trying to fix myself and started listening to my body, everything began to change.
Instead of fighting what I labeled as anxiety, I got curious.
What are you protecting me from?
What do you think might happen?
What do you need right now?
Over time with patience, consistency, and the right support that constant hum began to quiet.
Not overnight.
Not dramatically.
But steadily.
And today, I can honestly say this:
I don’t live with anxiety anymore.
Not because my life is perfect.
But because my nervous system trusts me now.
Support Helps the Nervous System Relearn Safety
Nothing replaces time, presence, breath, and compassion.
But there are tools that can support the nervous system as it relearns safety — not by forcing calm, but by creating the conditions where calm can emerge naturally.
For me, low and consistent support has always been the most powerful.
Not pushing.
Not overpowering.
Just steady reassurance.
When nervous system regulation is the focus, these are the supports I return to again and again:
Golden Teacher
In low doses, Golden Teacher has been deeply supportive for softening fear responses, calming mental noise, and creating grounded clarity. It helps the nervous system feel less threatened by the present moment and more open to what’s actually here.
Mini Zen, Zen & Super Zen
These have been anchors during seasons when my system needed extra reassurance. They support emotional regulation, ease overstimulation, and help bring the body out of constant vigilance and into a more settled state.
Rooted
Rooted has been especially powerful for building nervous system trust. It supports grounding and embodiment that deep, felt sense of safety that doesn’t come from thinking, but from being fully in your body.
These aren’t fixes.
They’re supports.
They don’t override your system, they meet it where it is.
And when paired with curiosity, rest, honesty, and breath, they help your body loosen its grip not because it’s told to, but because it finally feels safe enough to.
Your Anxiety Isn’t the Enemy
Your anxiety isn’t a flaw.
It’s your body saying,
“This once mattered. I’m trying to keep you safe.”
Your job isn’t to silence it.
It’s to update its data.
To show your body gently, consistently, that you’re here now.
That you’re capable.
That you can respond.
Give it time.
Give it trust.
And slowly, your nervous system will stop guarding the gates
and start walking beside you again.
With so much compassion,
XOOX
